During this course students will be introduced to foundational American Sign Language vocabulary and grammar.  This will include the manual alphabet, numbers, basic sentence structure, and everyday conversational signs.  Emphasis will be placed on visual communication, expressive and receptive skills, and an introduction to Deaf culture and norms.  By the end of Level 1, students will be able to engage in simple conversations and understand basic signed communication. 

The instructor for this course will be Javonda Adams.  She also teaches ASL at Central Piedmont Community College and serves as the Cultural Affairs Director for MyASLTeacherRocks.  Her work emphasizes ASL immersion, Deaf cultural competency, and community-based learning experiences that support students, interpreters and educators.
