During this course students will be introduced to foundational American Sign Language vocabulary and grammar. This will include the manual alphabet, numbers, basic sentence structure, and everyday conversational signs. Emphasis will be placed on visual communication, expressive and receptive skills, and an introduction to Deaf culture and norms. By the end of the course, students will be able to engage in simple conversations and understand basic signed communication. As students learn they will be able to communicate with increasing sentence complexity, and developing greater fluency in expressive and receptive signing. This course will focus on conversational practice, storytelling, and cultural awareness, helping students communicate more confidently and naturally in ASL.
The instructor for this course will be Ms. Javonda Adams. She also teaches ASL at Central Piedmont Community College and serves as the Cultural Affairs Director for MyASLTeacherRocks. Her work emphasizes ASL immersion, Deaf cultural competency, and community-based learning experiences that support students, interpreters and educators.
